Girl Overboard

Everybody thinks Syrah is the golden girl. After all, her father is Ethan Cheng, billionaire, and she has everything any kid could possibly desire: a waterfront mansion, jet plane, and custom-designed snowboards. But most of what flitters in her life is fool’s gold. Her half-siblings hate her; her bestfriends’s girlfriend is ruining their friendship, and her own so called boyfriend is only after her for her father’s name. When her broken heart results in a snowboarding accident that exiles her from the mountains—the one place where she feels free and accepted for who she is, not what she has—can Syrah rehab both her busted-up knee and her bruised heart?

  1. How do I describe the book Overboard by Justina Chen Headley? First off, it tells the story of this girl and how her father is a billionaire but she has nothing. It’s a book about snowboarding and living on the mountains, but when a big tragedy happens, it exempts her from being able to do the things she loves. Justina Chen Headley wrote this book to prove to everyone and send a message saying that even if your parents have all the money in the world, you still would want to live a normal life like everyone else, have your friends for the way you should and not just having people become your friend because of the money that is in your family.

“The worst part of having it all is having to deal with it all—the good, the bad, and the just plain weird.” It’s hard to live a life when you see your parents in magazines or on the news more then seeing them in person.

I think this book would interest some teenage girls who like snowboarding and living life as a billionaire. This book caught my eye by the cover. We all know we shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover so I read the back and found it very appealing about the accident she had got into and how everything ended up being.

  2. Thanks for sharing Sabrina, and thanks for sharing how why you picked up the book in the first place, it's always interesting to learn why people begin reading something!

How do you feel about this incredibly wealthy girl that still has to deal with everyday life problems? Can you sympathize with her, or do you find her whinny because, really, she's got a lot in life many only dream of? Does this show you how people are all fundamentally the same?

Personally I tend to have trouble sympathizing with wealthy characters going through tough times because their problems are usually no worse than mine, plus they never have to worry about paying the bills. But that's just me and I'm genuinely interested in how others feel about this.

I look forward to hearing more!

  4. Does anyone know why someone can have everything in the world but not trust in themselves or even be able to feel any fear or pain? I thought that f you could have anything and want everything that you could conquer everything that you ever would want to.

This book taught me "even if you get hurt you need to get back on your feet and keep moving on. Continue doing the things you love. You hurt yourself and can't do that one thing anymore you can still think about it and make game plans for other people.

I snowboard and I do TaeKwon-Do, But i have also gotten hurt in both. My snowboarding I went to do a back flip off the biggest jump of the mountain and I landed smack on my head. I sat for a minute so I wasn't dizzy anymore I hiked back up to the top of the jump and tried it again. Never give up on trying new things, because other people will follow in your path. For my TaeKwon-Do I have gotten hurt so many times in my ten years I have been there. But I always was back up and kept trying. Have indomitable Spirit and never stop trying and never give up. But never say you can't do something because if you set your mind to it you truly can do anything you want. Maybe with just a little bit of help but that's okay because then next time you'll be able to do it yourself.
