MAUS 2 By Art Spiegelman

A memoir of Vladek Spiegleman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe, and about his son, a cartoonist who tries to come to terms with his father, his story, and history. Cartoon format portrays Jews as mice, Nazis as cats. Using a unique comic-strip-as-graphic-art format, the story of Vladek Spiegelman's passage through the Nazi Holocaust is told in his own words. Acclaimed as a "quiet triumph" and a "brutally moving work of art," the first volume of Art Spiegelman's Maus introduced readers to Vladek Spiegelman. The story succeeds perfectly in shocking us out of any lingering sense of familiarity with the events described, approaching, as it does, the unspeakable through the diminutive. As the New York Times Book Review commented, "[it is] a remarkable feat of documentary detail and novelistic vividness...an unfolding literary event." This long-awaited sequel, subtitled And Here My Troubles Began, moves us from the barracks of Auschwitz to the bungalows of the Catskills. Genuinely tragic and comic by turns, it attains a complexity of theme and a precision of thought new to comics and rare in any medium. Maus ties together two powerful stories: Vladek's harrowing tale of survival against all odds, delineating the paradox of daily life in the death camps, and the author's account of his tortured relationship with his aging father. Vladek's troubled remarriage, minor arguments between father and son, and life's everyday disappointments are all set against a backdrop of history too large to pacify. At every level this is the ultimate survivor's tale--and that too of the children who somehow survive even the survivors.

In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant The Shack wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him.

Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder

While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State, where he and his brother and sisters work at their chores from dawn to dinner most days-no matter what the weather. There is still time fro fun, though, especially with horses, witch Almanzo loves more than anything.

I like this book because it has great detail and I just can't put the book down! I think Laura did an excellent job writing this book.

Let the Mountains Talk, Let the Rivers Run by David Brower

As a climber, David Brower scaled many previously "insurmountable" mountains. As a conservationist, Brower has bought a mountaineer's determination and reverence for nature to his efforts to protect the earth and educate its human’s inhabitants. He has kept dams out of Grand Canyon and loggers out of Olympic National Park, established the National Wilderness Preservation System, added seven new regions to the National Park System, and helped to foster a mind-set that questions careless growth.
In Let the Mountains Talk, Let the Rivers Run, the "archdruid" of modern environmentalism, the man The New York Times designated the most effective conservation activist in the world, offers a tough, witty, and impassioned game plan "for those who would save the earth." Now eighty-two years old, Brower also recounts the highs and lows of his controversial career, sparing no politician or public figure, least of all himself. He frankly discusses his mistakes, such as compromising on the construction of Glen Canyon Dam, and the strategic flourishes that have earned him both fans and foes, including  the full-page, in-your-face national newspaper ads that helped save the Grand Canyon by asking "Should we also flood the Sistine Chapel so that tourists can get a better look at the ceiling?"

Annabeth is terrified. just when she is about to be reunited with Percy after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera- it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods to find- and close- the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?
Annabeth's biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he's now attached to Roman ways? Does he still need his old friends? As the daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, Annabeth knows she was born to be a leader, but never again does she want to be without Seaweed Brain by her side.

Werewolves Dead Moon Rising

In the book there are several short stories written by all different authors,; but they all revolve around werewolves. In one of the short stories called skin belt by William R. Halliar, the main character has been changing into a werewolf on the full moon. He decides to get help and finds an old man. The old man gives him something that will stop his changes, and it works! But the old an wants it back, and is willing to do almost anything to get back his creation. What will the main character do?! I really like this book because of all the different writing styles put together into one book. All of the writing styles gives new side or idea to the werewolf legends, and the fresh new takes makes me want to read more. Also most of them go really far into characters like their looks and feelings, especially when they transform, which gives it really good imagery. I recommend this book highly; but not to younger kids. It has some inappropriate references and some foul language.

How to train your dragon by: Cressida Cowell

How to train your dragon is a great book. I love it. Its very exciting and thrilling and i cant take my eyes off of it. my favorite part is when hiccup (thew main character) gets thrown into the mouth of a dragon. the setting is in viking time with dragons. My favorite character is hiccup and his dragon toothless. The whole reason Hiccup, Fishlegs, Dogsbreath the duh brain, and Snotlout, get a dragon is because they have to or they will get shipped off to cannibal island. I like Hiccup and his dragon because they both are extraordinary and have fun adventures, while toothless is just adorable.

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien

A classic work of American literature that has not stopped changing minds and lives since it burst onto the literary scene, The Things They Carried is a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling.

The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three.

Taught everywhere—from high school classrooms to graduate seminars in creative writing—it has become required reading for any American and continues to challenge readers in their perceptions of fact and fiction, war and peace, courage and fear and longing.

Farmer Boy by: Laura Ingalls Wilder

This book is about a boy named Almanzo Wilder. The part i like in this book is when Almanzo gets the colt of his dreams. This is the most surprising part to me is because i would not think that he would actually get a colt at the age of 11. My favorite character is Almanzo because he is always doing something interesting in the book.

Continuity of the ATA Literature blog

Good morning,

I would like to let you all know why I keep sticking my nose into Missy's class 'business' i.e. the Lit Blog. A blog, like anything else on the Internet, is permanent and lasting.

I do encourage every Instructor to customize their class, and make it all their own, we do have guidelines for assignments, and assessment, etc., but they are actually really just guidelines!

I've noticed how proprietary I feel about the blog.  (Should that be proprietorially?)  I want to leave this behind us, much like our Legacy projects.  That is why I keep going back to the "rules".

Now, I also have to remember, that like any other good piece of writing, or tangible item, our blog needs to be "living" to stay relevant while it lasts.  Constitutional Scholars say that the United States Constitution is a "living document", it changes as the needs of the people change and the law allows for such changes under very specific circumstances.  Sometimes those changes are not as great in hindsight as they were up front!  (The 18th Amendment for example!)

It is for the everlasting-ness that I am constantly referring to the rules of posting (and have now put that up as part of the header).  Since this blog has been through 5 different ATA English Instructors, if it is going to be continuous, I feel the format needs to remain consistent.

So, if we as a group decide the format of the blog needs to be changed, we certainly will address that.  However, until we decide that as a group (and ATA Instructors get veto power like the President, and I get the power of the Judiciary!), the format will remain.

Thank you, and please take pride in what you leave behind!  I know that I take pride in this blog and what you all leave behind.

To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world. . . . It's where he was born, it's where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.
Room is home to Jack, but to Ma it's the prison where she has been held for seven years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in this eleven-by-eleven-foot space. But with Jack's curiosity building alongside her own desperation, she knows that Room cannot contain either much longer.
Room is a tale at once shocking, riveting, exhilarating—a story of unconquerable love in harrowing circumstances, and of the diamond-hard bond between a mother and her child.

I was hoping that this series would be about the Arthurian legend, but it is a good sci-fi/fantasy book if slightly confusing

THE DOOMSDAY KEY By James Rollins

At princeton University, a famed geneticest dies inside a biohazard lab. In Rome, a Vatican archaeolagist is found dead in St. Perers Basilica. In africa, a U.s. senators son is slain outside a Red Cross camp. The three murders on three contanents bear a horrifyig connection: all the victims are marked by a Druidei pagan cross vurned into their flesh.   I liked the book because it was a horror book!  The plot never stopped it just kept it constent. " he ran up a random guy in the mall and slit his throwt and that was the end of that guy"

The forever king

The forever king by Molly Cochran and Warren Murphy has many main characters. At the moment, there are only two. Their names are Hal Woczniak, and Saladin. Hal used to work for the FBI, but hes practically lost him self in beer and filth. But when he meets a strange old man weird things start happening...... Saladin is in a mental health 'prison', but what will happen when hes moved out of his cell? I am reading this book because it is interesting and finds a way at tugging on all of my emotion. Mostly suspense and intrigue.

Animal Farm

My favorite Character, Snowball has just gotten expelled by Napoleon, and the animals are starting to revolve around Napoleons evil plans.

I really like this book, I like how it relates to human nature.

A Young People's History of the United States: Columbus to the War on Terror by Howard Zinn

A Young People's History of the United States brings to US history the viewpoints of workers, slaves, immigrants, women, Native Americans, and others whose stories, and their impact, are rarely included in books for young people. A Young People's History of the United States is also a companion volume to The People Speak, the film adapted from A People's History of the United States and Voices of a People’s History of the United States.

Beginning with a look at Christopher Columbus’s arrival through the eyes of the Arawak Indians, then leading the reader through the struggles for workers’ rights, women’s rights, and civil rights during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and ending with the current protests against continued American imperialism, Zinn in the volumes of A Young People’s History of the United States presents a radical new way of understanding America’s history. In so doing, he reminds readers that America’s true greatness is shaped by our dissident voices, not our military generals.

I love this book and others by Howard Zinn, his writing style is so intense, gripping, and detailed that you can't put the book down.

In One Person

The book I'm reading now is "In One Person," by John Irving, who's written a lot of books I really like, including "Cider House Rules" and "The World According to Garp."  I like it so far, but it seems a lot like my favorite Irving book, "A Prayer for Owen Meany"; the setting and a number of the characters are very similar-- too similar for my taste, since I don't think any book can compare to "Owen Meany."  I hope I start seeing differences between the two novels, but I'll finish this one anyway even if I don't because I am enjoying the plot so far.

The Great Gatsby is the book I have been reading for history. I'm reading it because this is the book he recommended to me and gave me to read.So far I find it a little dull, but its not bad. This is what the back cover says: This is the definitive, textually accurate edition of a classic of the twentieth century literature, The Great Gatsby. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan has been acclaimed by generations of readers. But the first edition contained a number of errors resulting from Fitzgerald's extensive revisions and a rushed production schedule. Subsequent printings introduced further departures from the authors words. This edition based on the Cambridge critical text, restores all the languages of Fitzgerald's masterpiece. Drawing on the manuscript and surviving proofs of the novel, along with Fitzgerald's later revisions and corrections, this authorized text- the Great Gatsby as Fitzgerald intended it.

Letters of the Dragon by: Bruce Lee

Letters of the Dragon Correspondence, 1958-1973 is a fascinating glimpse of the private Bruce Lee behind the public image-a man with the patience and concern to dedicate as much effort to crafting a thoughtful personal answer of the letter of a young fan as to those from his old friends and associates; an extremely active man never too busy to make time for an old family friend in need of simple companionships; a man who never wrote without careful thought, and never thought from the head alone, but always from the head and heart together. The letters in this inspiring book track Bruce Lee’s career and development from his decision, made while he was still in secondary school, to move to the U.S. to further his education, through the many setbacks, rededicated efforts, and triumphs of life that shaped his martial art and humanity, all the way to the last letter he ever composed, just hours before his sudden death. After absorbing the letters in this volume, the reader will inevitably find that the private Bruce Lee was every bit as great as the public Bruce Lee, and deeper and broader by far. Letters of the Dragon: Correspondence, 1958-1973 is conclusive evidence that a life lived well in never a life too short.

Empire by Orson Scott Card

The American Empire is growing too fast, and the fault lines at home are stressed to the breaking point.  The war of words between Right and Left has collapsed into a shooting war, though most people just want to be left alone.

The battle rages between the high-technology weapons on one side and militia foot solders on the other, devastating the cities and overrunning the countryside.  But the vast majority, who only want the killing to stop and the nation to return to more peaceful days, have technology, weapons, and strategic geniuses of their own.

When the American dream shatters into violence, who can hold the people and the government together?  And which side will you be on?

King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild

At the turn of the century, as the European powers were carving up Africa, King Leopold II of Belgium carried out a brutal plundering of the territory surrounding the Congo River. Ultimately slashing the area's population by ten million, he still managed to shrewdly cultivate his reputation as a great humanitarian. A tale far richer than any novelist could invent, King Leopold's Ghost is the horrifying account of a megalomaniac of monstrous proportions. It is also the deeply moving portrait of those who defied Leopold: African rebel leaders who fought against hopeless odds and a brave handful of missionaries, travelers, and young idealists who went to Africa for work or adventure but unexpectedly found themselves witnesses to a holocaust and participants in the twentieth century's first great human right's movement.

Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger

A memoir of astonishing power, savagery, and ashen lyricism, Storm of Steel illuminates not only the horrors but also the fascination of total war as seen through the eyes of an ordinary Ferman soldier.  Young, tough, patriotic but also disturbingly self-aware, Junger exulted in the war, which he saw not just as a great national conflict but-more importantly- as a unique personal struggle.  Leading raiding parties, defending trenches against murderous British incursions, simply enduring as shells tore his comrades apart, Junger keeps testing himself, braced for the death.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Spy

A Russian Scientist defects believing that the in West he will he will more easily realize his dream of contacting planets in outer space. But British Intelligence and the CIA have more worldly plans for him and move quickly, relentlessly, leaving a trail of blood from the Sahara desert, to Manhattan, Paris, Dublin, and halfway back across Africa.

I've decided to reread a favorite book of mine, Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.  I first read it to make sure a student who told me he was reading it was actually reading it and not just watching the movie ;), but I got so involved in it I read it all at once, in about 5 hours, which is quick for me.  I just love what Palahniuk does with language; in fact, I've read most of his books since this one.  He's really dark, but hilarious at the same time.  Here's an excerpt:  "You wake up at JFK.... the plane leans to one side and hangs in the decision to right itself or roll.  For this moment, nothing matters.  Look up into the stars and you're gone.  Not your luggage.... Not your bad breath.... A thud, and the second wheel hits the tarmac.  The staccato of a hundred seat-belt buckles snapping open, and the single-use friend you almost died sitting next to says:  I hope you make your connection" (p. 31).  Good stuff.

On the night of Novemner 19, 1973, following surgery, thirty-one-year-old wife and mother Betty J. Eadie died….  This is her extraordinary story of the events that followed, her astonishing proofof life after physical death.  She saw more, perhaps, than any other person has seen before and shares her almost photographic recollections of the remarkable details .  Compelling, inspiring, and infinitely reasurring, her vivid account gives is a glimpse of the peace and unconditional love that await us all.  More important, Betty’s journey offers a simple message that can trasnform our lives today, showing us our purpose and guiding us to live that way we were meant to- joyously, abundantly, and with love.

The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty

January 20, 1968

We're going to move out while it's still dark, try to get a jump on them. Everybody's  packing as much ammo as they can carry. Most of us even have LAW's-light anti-tank assault weapons. The terrain's too rough for tanks, but we can use the LAW's to take out bunkers. If we need them. Grenades, bandoliers filled with magazines for our M-16s..., extra belts of M-60 ammo for the Machine guns, bayonets, Kabar knives.... but it doesn't even feel like boys with Toys this time - it feels like Men with Weapons. Nervous men, but men. If they want to take us on, we'll be ready. I hope. Last night I wrote letters to everyone in my family, just in case.

THE FOREVER KING

THE FOREVER KING by Molly Cochran and Warren Murphy definitely gives off a suspenseful air to it, making you want to read more. I have read this once before, and I read it in one sitting.I loved how the writing flowed together perfectly, in such great detail that the images just flew into my mind. It surprised me how they wrote it, how they would make you think one thing would happen but then the exact opposite would instead. It is my all time favorite book. This is what the cover gives as a description; In a darkened house not far from the place where Camelot may once have stood, a man schemes. Once the cup that men call the holey grail was his. Soon it will be his again. The grail's protectors are few and weak:an alcohol soaked ex-FBI agent; a courtly old gentleman who one, long ago, held awesome power, and a ten year old boy. Shadows in flight by Orson Scott Card

The three, called Ender, Carlotta, and Sergeant, work to learn enough to help in the effort.  But Earth holds no minds more brilliant than those of bean and his children, and there is no cure.  As the generations pass, there comes a time when no one on Earth remembers them, save as a voice on the ansible, a distant whisper from the stars.

Xenocide

On Lusitania, Ender found a world where humans and pequininos and the Hive Queen could all live together, where three very different intelligent species could find common ground at last.  Or so he thought.
But Lusitania also harbors the descolada, a virus that kills all humans it infects, but which the pequininos require in order to transform into adults.  The Starways Congress so fears the effect of the descolada, should it escape from Lusitania, that they have ordered the destruction of the entire planet, and all who live there.  The fleet is on it's way, and a second Xenocide seems inevitable.
     Until the fleet vanishes.
The task of discovering how the ships were made to disappear falls to Gloriously Bright, the most brilliant analytical mind in a world of people bred to superintelligence.  There is little doubt that she can solve the puzzle; but will she choose life or death for the three races that live on Lusitania?

Hush, Hush fans?

Has anybody read the Hush, Hush books by Becca Fitzpatrick?  I first found out about them when I saw a publicity poster for the first book at the school here in Turkey; they must be pretty popular if they're being translated into Turkish.  I don't know much about them, beyond Amazon blurbs, but they look similar to the Twilight series, at least in that they're about love and non-human beings.  Any takers?

Sweep, Book of Shadows by Cate Tiernan

Something is happening to me that
I don't understand.

I see things, feel things in a new way.
I can do things normal people can't do.
Powerful things. Magickal things.
It scares me.

I never chose to learn witchcraft.
But I'm starting to wonder if witchcraft
is choosing me.

Dragon Art

Dragon Art, how to Draw Fantastic Dragons and Fantasy Creatures by J "NeonDragon" Peffer is a drawing book that teaches you how to draw dragons mostly, and a few other magical creatures. As the back of the book says: How to Draw a Dragon: "Cautiously approach the dragon, offer it a piece of candy or a little sister, and draw while it happily munches away." I like this book because it has allot of great artistic ideas.

Mrs. Byrne's Dictionary By: Josefa Heifetz Byrne

This fascinating work is a dictionary of  unusual, obscure, and preposterous words.  It contains thousands of the weirdest words in the English language, but the definition of each each word has been written clearly and directly.  And, incredible as it may seem, every entry in this book, even the most ludicrous, has been accepted as a formal or legitimate English word by at least one major dictionary.

Although Mrs. Byrne's Dictionary has enough humor in it to reward casual browsers, it is intended to serve as a supplement to a desk dictionary.  Such words as heredipety (legacy hunting), nikin (a very soft creature), noctuary (a diary of nighttime activities), pantophobia (fear of everything, cowardice), and saginate (to fatten, pamper) may soon be given general conversational currency.

Mrs. Byrne's Dictionary is the most helpful reference for students, writers, or anyone unable to locate just the right expressive word in a standard dictionary.

VT Drivers Manual

I was wondering if I could start a blog on the Vt Drivers Handbook. This especially apply to people that are getting ready to take their permit test. My thought was everyone can post on here things they are having trouble remembering or things that are unclear to them. Of course it will only work right if people actually participate and read the book.

The Lost Gate by Orson Scott Card

Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself.
He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins, and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father. Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people.
There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow. There is a secret library with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English — but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books. While Danny’s cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see.
Unfortunately, there are some secrets kept from Danny as well. And that will lead to disaster for the North family.

The Demon King By: Cinda Williams Chima

When 16-year-old Han Alister and his Clan friend Dancer encounter three underage wizards setting fire to the sacred mountain of Hanalea, he has no idea that this event will precipitate a cascade of disasters that will threaten everything he cares about.

Han takes an amulet from one of the wizards, Micah Bayar, to prevent him from using it against them. Only later does he learn that it has an evil history-it once belonged to the Demon King, the wizard who nearly destroyed the world a millennium ago. Moreover, the Bayars will stop at nothing to get it back.

Han’s life is complicated enough. He is the former streetlord of the Raggers—a street gang in the city of Fellsmarch. His street name, Cuffs, comes from the mysterious silver bracelets he has worn all his life—cuffs that are impossible to take off.

Now Han is working odd jobs, helping to support his family, and doing his best to leave his old life behind. Events conspire against him, however. When members of a rival gang start dying, Han naturally gets the blame.

Meanwhile, Princess Raisa ana’Marianna has her own battles to fight. As heir to the Gray Wolf throne of the Fells, she has just spent three years of relative freedom with her father’s family at Demonai Camp—riding, hunting, and working the famous Clan markets. Now court life in Fellsmarch pinches like a pair of too-small shoes.

Wars are raging to the south, and threaten to spread into the high country. After a long period of quiet, the power of the Wizard Council is once again growing. The people of the Fells are starving and close to rebellion. Now more than ever, there is a need for a strong queen.

However, Raisa’s mother Queen Marianna is weak and distracted by the handsome Gavan Bayar, High Wizard of the Fells. Raisa feels like a cage is closing around her—and an arranged marriage and eroded inheritance is the least of it.

Raisa wants to be more than an ornament in a glittering cage. She aspires to be like Hanalea—the legendary warrior queen who killed the Demon King and saved the world. With the help of her friend, the cadet Amon Byrne, she navigates the treacherous Gray Wolf Court, hoping she can unravel the conspiracy coalescing around her before its too late.

The Universe in a Nutshell by Stephen Hawking

Atlas of the world ninth edition by national geographics

This is by far the most enjoyable and informative visual guide i have ever read. Apart from the atlas section of it, it has so much information. One of my favorites was the the nations and the crucial information about every one for example the government, flag, population, agriculture, industry, and life expectancy. It also has the language of each nation along with some foreign terms and definitions. It has a whole section about space and planets for example distance from the sun, inner temp, outer temp, size, and orbit. And it has an entire metric conversions table with everything from weight to length.

Bad Kitty by Nick Bruel

Pet owners beware! Bad Kitty really needs a bath. Unfortunately...
This is one of the funnier books that I have found recently. As I have never done such, I had no idea trying to give a cat a bath would be this bad! Bruel does a nice job of giving you some facts but still keeping it funny.

Military Mavericks by David Roony

What makes a maverick? Is it simply an unorthodox mind, or is it more than that, a flagrant disregard for convention? Is there a place for the maverick in a disciplined military hierarchy and if so, is the military maverick more likely to win, or lose, his battles?

In his absorbing study of heroes who broke the rules, David Rooney shows how it is so often the maverick that turns every challenge to triumph and wins the unwinnable. The contrary chaos of war can be so intimidating that perhaps victory can only belong to the maverick. Here are stories of twelve mavericks, from Alexander the Great and Stonewall Jackson, through Garibaldi and Lawrence of Arabia to the Second World War and more. It is a great book for information on these people.

Welfare Brat by Mary Childers

I am about half way through this book and it is keeping me very interested. It drags a bit but no matter how boring the story can get it continues keep me wondering whats going to be the next event in their life. The thing I love about this book is that it's very real in an average persons life. It's not over exaggerated or unreal. I also love that it's not just in one point of view. They tell about how everyone in the family sees each other.
