The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before -- and survival.

  2. This is a good book. Though the first part of the book was a bit predictable. But I guess that Is because I am getting clues from the tailor and other fans out there talking about it. I also like how they have a lot of flashback scenes in the book. It makes me get a feel for my characters past and how the society is.

  3. I also suggest this to other readers who like a easier read but is a bit different.

  6. It sounds really suspenseful have you started it yet? Are there any more characters that are representing states and are the different age groups that fight?

  7. Well, There was almost a 12 year old the got a volunteer to trade her spot. There is also Peeta, who is in district 12 with Katniss. I am pretty sure Katniss is 16 and Peeta is 15. Heymitch is one of the previous winners of the hunger games. In fact, the only winner from district 12. Also, I wish they would just fight already! It is making me think soo much.. but maybe this is a strategy of the author.

  12. Uhmmm, I just became interested in the hunger games because everybody has been talking about it, so I just had to check it out.

No, I have not watched the movie. I want to read the book before seeing the movie.

  13. I have gotten right into this book. I really like how it goes into detail but not enough detail to get you trailed off from the main subject of the book. There has been a lot of surprises in this book that I would have never suspected which makes me want to know what else is hidden on the next page for me to find out. This is a pretty easy read, not many hard words or phrases. Overall, a very suspenseful book and I am enjoying it for once!

  15. I like the sounds of the book but what is the "Hunger Games" exactly and what is the Winning for districts.

  16. The whole sending young kids to fight to the death is kind of scary. It seems to be scary for the people who get picked.

  17. Actually Stephen, some of the people from the district's train specially to get into the hunger games. They think of it to be a privilege to represent their district. Dustin, I don't know what you mean, could you please specify further? And also, I don't want to give out any spoilers for the few who haven't read this book yet. xD

  18. I too read this book because of all the hype the movie was receiving. It is definitely what I would term a "fluff" book, I ended up reading the book in about two days, but I really enjoyed it. There is suspense, drama, emotional conflict and of course, inevitably a love story.

It's not a new concept and it's not the best concept, but the characters are well developed and engaging. The situation develops in a sometimes predictable way, but it is not disappointing.

I also saw the movie, after reading it. There is so much that happens in the book, it is impossible to fit that all into a two hour movie. When I was engaged in the movie it was because I was relating what I was seeing to what I knew the situation to be from reading the book.

  20. Yes, I do also agree that this is an easy read. I find this book to be a lot like the City of Ember kind of.. maybe not the fighting until death concept but the circumstances that they are in. It is similar to how District 12 is living. I like how this book is easier to compare than other books.
