I think this book is OK, but the writing style is somewhat boring in parts. I certainly don't think of it as a phenomenal book.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you have read any other "survival" type books, but if you have, have would "The Hunger Games" compare? "My side of the mountain" is a good one you could read.
ReplyDelete"My side of the mountain" sounds familiar but I don't think I've read it. I have read "Hatchet" though, the was a really good book. Along with it's sequel "The River".
ReplyDeleteHunter,
ReplyDeleteCan you give some specific examples of parts you thought were boring? If I remember correctly, a large part of the beginning is exposition (introducing the characters and the setting) and then preparation. The action doesn't really start until the games start. Is this what you found boring?
I'm also trying to think about _The Hunger Games_ and _Hatchet_. I guess they are both more thoughtful books. Some suspenseful action books are exciting but empty. Once I've read them, I don't remember a whole lot about the book. But all of the books mentioned here move at a more contemplative pace, I think. However, I think _My Side of the Mountain_ and _Hatchet give a little more practical advice about actually surviving in the wilderness. _The Hunger Games_ is more useful should you find yourself in a post-apocalyptic world controlled by a super-surveillant dictator. Gosh, does that sound too much like high school?
