Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

Ruby can take care of herself. She's used to counting on no one and answering to nobody. But all of that changes when her mother vanishes and Ruby is sent to live with her older sister, Cora. Now Ruby's got her own room in a fabulous new house, she's going to private school, and - for the first time - feeling as if she has a future. Plus, there's the adorable and sweet boy next door, Nate. Everything should be perfect. So why is Ruby so wary? And why is Nate keeping her at a distance? Ruby soon comes to realize that sometimes, in order to save yourself, you've got to reach out to someone else.

  1. I've only just started this book, but it has managed to keep me hooked. Not a lot has happened at this point, but you can tell there's going to be a good story to this book. When I first picked up this book, I didn't know what to expect. The cover had caught my eye though, so I decided to give it a try. And I'm glad I did because even though it's not as exciting as most books I pick out, it's still good. I like the characters and the plot seems interesting. The author has a way of really showing the main character's thoughts. Everything that I've read so far just really shows how Ruby, the main character, is just thinking "Yeah, right. This fabulous new life of mine will be taken away from me, so what's the point?" The author is giving the characters an attitude, which is helpful to really feel what the characters are feeling. I would suggest this book to anyone who is looking for a more realistic book to read.

  2. I have read this book and It seemed to catch my eye at first but I just did not get the motivation to actually read the whole thing. But I did pick it up again to re-read the book over and seemed to be more drawn to the book since the last time I had read it. Is there anything exciting happening right now? This author really takes the time to characterize even if the book goes slowly.

  3. The author does really take her time to characteraize every person, which does slow the story down, but I don't think it affects the story a whole lot. This book doesn't really have anything "exciting" happening so far, but something about the way the main character Ruby is acting, it manages to make me curious and keep readeing. With Ruby, you never know what she's going to do or say. Is she going to run away or will she adjust to this new life? Does she find her mom? Does she even want to find her mom? Will she let these new people into her life? When she turns 18, will she move out like she says she will? You never know what she's going to do because you'll get to a part in the book where you can guess her reaction and then she seems to change and your wrong. The author does a good job of showing Ruby changing as a person in this new life she has beeen thrown into.
