His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novic

Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors rise to Britain’s defense by taking to the skies . . . not aboard aircraft but atop the mighty backs of fighting dragons.
When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Capt. Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future–and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France’s own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte’s boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.

  1. How far have you read? I only remember reading until about the 3rd chapter, but I thought it had good potential. What do you think, since you've read farther?

  2. I have not gotten far enough in the book to actually meet the dragons yet. The battle to obtain the dragon egg was quite spectacular. I am enjoy the writers style, she describes the fight scenes greatly. I also liked how she started with a great action scene, it grabbed my attention immediately.

  3. I have gone past the third chapter, i'm not sure the exact page number. I am still enjoying the writers style and plot. One thing that still confuses me is that i can't tell if the dragon temeraire can speak or not. She makes it seem like he is saying something and then after the dialogue is finished its hard to find out who was talking.

  5. Is the book accurate to history? except for the dragons. are the dragons magic, or are the just big winged lizards?

  6. The book is accurate to our history. I have not got to any parts with aerial fights yet, but it does seem that they are just big winged lizards.

  7. I'm abandoning this book, because it was going on for too long without much action. Otherwise the writing style was fine, and i would still recommend to someone if they have a longer attention span.
