The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien

Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit who wanted to be left alone in quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf came along with a band of homeless dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and worse unknown dangers. Finally, it was Bilbo-alone and unaided-who had to confront the great dragon Smaug, the terror of an entire countryside!

  1. After a year of trying to grab this book before others did. I have finally got it. Although I do have some background knowledge of this book from the other people that stole the book before I got to it. As i have been reading it still seems to be fine with the background that I have. For it has not ruined the story at all. It was just enough knowledge to get interested, but not enough to ruin it.

  2. If you were a 13 yr old boy in America in 50's when this was released, and reading the first real fantasy in the universe, what would your reaction be?

  3. I found it to be a book that was hard to put down, between the action and characters, i felt i had to keep reading. Do you feel the same way? If not, please give an explanation of why.

  4. How do you feel about Tolkien's description of the interactions of the characters to their environment? When I read the book the amount of description that Tolkien put into the story was almost unbearable, how do you feel about it? Also I would be interested in your view of the comparison of the movie to the book if you have seen the movie?

  5. My whole perspective on things would change thinking that their might have been a whole other world, with hobbits, elves, wizards, dwarves, and dragons . Thinking of all the possibilities, and create new stories in my head about this world.

  6. I do also find it hard to put it down when i start reading it. I think this is a great book now that i have started reading it. Since i have started reading it, every time i had sum time to spend when their was nothing to do i just sat down and read it.

  7. I like the description that Tolkien uses, although it sometimes gets kind of annoying. But i do know that when this new type of story came out nobody knew of it. So Tolkien had to describe it all, and now almost everyone knows what a hobbit or elf is so not as much description is needed. After I started reading the book i tried to watch the first The Hobbit movie but i could not i found it quite unbearable.

  8. That's interesting to me, Keagan; why did you find it so difficult to watch the movie?

  9. I don't know exactly why it was so hard for me to watch the movie but i think it is because i generally expect more from Tolkien movies, because i really enjoyed the lord of the rings movies, and they were more full of action.

  10. That's really interesting. Is the Hobbit book lacking in action, too?
