The Hobbit
Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life,
rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his
contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of
dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an
adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded
by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo
reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely
Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature
known as Gollum.

What do you think of the writing style? I'm also reading this at the moment, and I thought that it would be interesting so hear a different view-point. I've always been told that Tolkiens books were quite long and wordy, and I must agree. There have also been some places that the general quality of the writing have not been up to my image of Tolkien writing. While a would still say this is an absolutely wonderful book, I was surprised at these... Errors? Whatever the case, have you noticed anything like that?
ReplyDeleteI have noticed a few errors in Tolkiens writing and do agree that at times it is very, very wordy. But if you look past these they be very interesting books. I do like the in-depth writing in battle seens which makes them them come to life in a way other books just don't justis to.
DeleteI have also read this book before, and I was wondering if anyone else took particular delight in the riddles and songs Tolkien cleverly spins into the writing?
