Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen

This book is an alternate ending to Paulsen's Hatchet. In Hatchet Brian is rescued before winter. In this alternate ending story Brian is not rescued, and begins realizing he must survive the winter.

  1. I have read Hatchet and The River by Gary Paulsen when I was younger, but just recently I realized (thanks to Alden) there are more books. So I started out reading the Winter. It was not until I started reading it that I noticed it was an alternate ending scenario.

  2. I have read all of these books including Brian's winter. What do you thing of this alter-net ending where Brian doesn't get rescued and he has to survive longer out on his own?

I found that I like this series because of the way Brian thinks or at least the way Gary Paulsen describes his thinking. I like that Brian adapted to his surroundings and how he coped with everything that was thrown at him.

  3. Alden,
I think this book is a really good idea, and it really shows how hard it would be to survive out in the wild.
One thing I've noticed about Brian is he adapts easily to all his problems.Possibly Paulsen wanted Brian to look more like an animal than a person. The way Brian thinks in my opinion is almost more like an animal than human. At one point he thinks he's crazy, but he tells himself he can't be crazy because he thinks he is.
