Gifts by Ursula K. Le Guin

  1. This book is about a boy named Orrec and his decision not to use his gift. Gift are like special powers some people can use. Some of the people can control fire, bring a plague, move the earth etc. Orrecs gift is that he can unmake or destroy. But he is frightened by his gift and decides to blind fold him self (he has to be able to speak, see and point for the gift to work). His friend Gry helps him navigate with his now blindfolded eyes as they wander out onto the country side by themselves.

  3. Hunter,

This action of impairing himself seems like a very courageous act. Unless it's actually cowardly, and he's trying to avoid responsibility. Which do you think? Is he trying to give up rather than use the power he has for good? I also wonder if he will actually learn more by being blind.

  4. I think it's a courageous act... I mean he could just be a whiny little boy who doesn't want to have all the responsibility, but I believe he's doing it because the gift really is dangerous.
