The music of the dolphins!

The book music of the dolphins by Karen Hesse is a great book! I think that this book is good so far because she is trying to explain to people that she belongs to a family of dolphins. I think its a funny story because the people she is staying wiht will not believe her she is a dolphin too. She tries to tell people that grew up with dolphins since she was four years old. The people she is staying with are like doctors. They teach her how to read and learn as a human not as a dolphin. She can make dolphin noises and things like that. She also has an amazing voice! The doctor's give her music and a harmonica and she teaches herself to sing. She wishes everyday to go to the ocean so she can swim with the dolphins. If you want to learn more read the book "Music of the Dolphins". If you like dolphins I think that you might enjoy this book, becauseIi know for sure that i did.

  1. Sabrina,

I'm very happy to hear you so excited and articulate about a book. This sounds like it could easily be either tragedy (a unique individual misunderstood and confined) or a comedy (a fish-out-of-water story with hilarious misunderstandings). Which do you think it is? Or is it both?

You write that "the people she is staying with will not believe she is a dolphin too." Does she really think she is a dolphin? Do you think she is a dolphin? Does living with a family of dolphins make one a dolphin? I ask because it raises the question of identity. If other people see you as one thing, but you feel inside as if you are something else, who is to decide? If you are adopted, who are your "real" parents?

There's also the issue of transforming her gift into a recognizable form. When she learns to sing and play music, instead of making dolphin noises, is she compromising her talent to appease the "regular" people? Or is she transforming her gift into something special?

How did you find this book? What made you decide to pick this up and drop the investigation book?

  3. Sabrina,

Glad you've found a way to keep reading, even if you lose on ebook. I hope you'll continue to read _Music of the Dolphins_ even now that you've found _Curse of the Spellmans_. How often do you need to read a book to keep up with it? If you leave one book for a week or more, do you have trouble coming back to it or remembering what's going on?
