Zodiac by: Romina Russell

At the dawn of time, there were 13 Houses in the Zodiac Galaxy. Now only 12 remain....

Rhoma Grace is a 16-year-old student from House Cancer with an unusual way of reading the stars. While her classmates use measurements to make accurate astrological predictions, Rho can’t solve for ‘x’ to save her life—so instead, she looks up at the night sky and makes up stories.

When a violent blast strikes the moons of Cancer, sending its ocean planet off-kilter and killing thousands of citizens—including its beloved Guardian—Rho is more surprised than anyone when she is named the House’s new leader. But, a true Cancrian who loves her home fiercely and will protect her people no matter what, Rho accepts.

Then, when more Houses fall victim to freak weather catastrophes, Rho starts seeing a pattern in the stars. She suspects Ophiuchus—the exiled 13th Guardian of Zodiac legend—has returned to exact his revenge across the Galaxy. Now Rho—along with Hysan Dax, a young envoy from House Libra, and Mathias, her guide and a member of her Royal Guard—must travel through the Zodiac to warn the other Guardians.

But who will believe anything this young novice says? Whom can Rho trust in a universe defined by differences? And how can she convince twelve worlds to unite as one Zodiac?

  1. This sounds REALLY good. How are the characters? The plot? Are there any more books? Are there any movies? Do you love this book as much as I want to, or do you simply like it?

  2. What do you think of the writing style of the book? Does the author use a light sentence structure, or does she use intricate word patterns that make you have to think about what she means? How does the author develop the characters - does she describe their physical attributes in detail or does she imply character through actions made?

  3. Kahla: I really hope that there will be a movie, not sure that there are more books but i also hope that there are. The characters are very well detailed and work sorta with each other.

  4. Katana: The author uses alot of description in what the characters wear and see and do, but not as much description on them personally as I would want. She just submerges you into the world and lets you soak up all the information you can take and still make the book worth while. She definitely has a good amount of details on the characters, but again I want more, which will probably keep going farther in the book.

    1. By not enough description on the characters personally, what do you mean? On their background? Their mind set? Their rational? Do you feel that the author repeats herself at all in the book in regards to how a character acts in certain situations, or perhaps that a scene type is used too often?

  5. Katana: Not enough description about their background, and how they look. I feel like she repeats herself with one of the main male character's eyes, I mean do we have to know that his eyes are indigo blue every time the main character talks? But i guess since she's a teenage girl who has a crush on a guy, in a way it makes sense.

  6. I've gotten further into the book, and I'm at the point where Rho is talking with like the major major guardian, Empress Moira of Virgo, but Moira doesn't believe Rho because of two reasons: one, Rho is sixteen, and two: The person she is trying to warn everybody about is a myth/ childhood tale. Plus Rho is having feelings for her advisor and another guardian which is illegal. But in her defense she didn't know he was a guardian, well I mean not even Hysan's people know he is the true guardian.

  7. So a lot happened while I was reading, the bad guy Ochus attacked Virgo and almost killed two guardians. So Rho now has one guardian to believe her. So now she, Mathias, and Hysan are traveling to Aries, which is filled with militia, robbers, and spys. I'm starting to like Mathias and Hysan more and more, as the story goes on. I think this is a tiny bit different from what I usually read, I don't usually read science fiction stories more realistic dystopian future stories. I think I am warming up to Hysan more because he has told Rho a lot about his personal life and how he grew up being a super young guardian and all.

  8. So right now we met Mathias's parents who work in Aries, in the like smaller divisions of the planet they live on which is Cancer, Also the ambassador is not believing Rho and telling her she is doing a terrible job as new guardian who is only sixteen, has both her father and brother missing form when their planet exploded, saving the world from Ochus, and trying to get her stolen Ephemeris, which was the previous Guardian's who died. so....... *facepalm* Honestly most of the time I don't really root for the main character, because if the main character had it easy and everyone liked the main character it would be a very boring book, but in this case I mean just give her a break. Jeez.

  9. As of now Rho is in front of the Plenum talking in front of all the leaders and ambassadors of all the planets, and the only person who trusts and believes Rho is Empress Moira who is in a coma from an attack from Ochus on Virgo.... So yeah Rho has dug herself in a very deep hole right now. Shew is also contemplating whether or not she should stop what she's doing and go look for her dad and brother. Or whether she should save the universe from a story book monster that actually exists and is getting crap for believing.

  10. So, if she doesn't save the universe, then what?Does everyone become obliterated or does life go on under the tyranny of an evil ruler? Seems to me that if you don't save the universe, it wouldn't make much sense to go looking for people who aren't going to exist...

  11. Katana: I pretty she somehow saves the universe from Ochus, because the author wrote another book. I also have a feeling that he will come back or something if she does "defeat" him. Also I think since where she came from family matters to her a lot so I guess that's a reason she wants to look for them.

  12. So now that Gemini has been hit and one of the twins has been vaporized, everyone believes Rho, but instead of her and the houses working together, they want Rho to lead them to victory with weapons and other destructive things, against a powerful evil thirteenth guardian who uses the Psy (which is like a huge computer that guardians and the high guards can access through their minds.) So if Rho and the rest were to use the Psy, Ochus would know where they are and kill them. So I doubt that guns and things would kill someone that powerful, but that's just me.

  13. I finally finished the book, and man was it exciting I am excited to read the next book in the series. A lot of things happened Rho faced Ochus. I don't want to give to much away, but the author has prepared her readers for the next book. A quick spoiler Mathias dies later in this book and I really hope that the author brings her back in the next book. So right now Hysan, Rubidum, and Rho are traveling in a ship to see Rho's brother Stanton, in a Gemini refugee camp. The reason Rho is going to get her brother is because her guardianship was taken from her. Ochus told her that Cancer will not feel his wrath again because she is a worthy opponent.....So I am confused now. But I would recommend this book to people who like sci-fi technology, action stories. It does have a love triangle sort of.
