The Giver by Lois Lowry

The Giver, the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most influential novels of our time. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Lois Lowry has written three companion novels to The Giver, including Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

  1. I liked this book, though some parts of the story which were supposed to be dramatic reveals were a bit obvious.

  2. This from what I remember is great book, that not only makes one reflect on them selves, but also show the real variety of the author. Lois Lowry(the author) also wrote a long series of children's books.

  3. This was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. I assume the obvious dramatic reveals you are talking about are what the society does with the old and infirm and the Giver's weird relationship with the previous Receiver. What made them obvious for you?

I still remember the scene where he watches his dad on camera give an injection to one of the infant twins. Gave me chills.
