The Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman

In the astonishing finale to the His Dark Materials trilogy, Lyra and Will are in unspeakable danger. With help from Iorek Byrnison the armored bear and two tiny Gallivespian spies, they must journey to a dank and gray-lit world where no living soul has ever gone. All the while, Dr. Mary Malone builds a magnificent Amber Spyglass. An assassin hunts her down, and Lord Asriel, with a troop of shining angels, fights his mighty rebellion, in a battle of strange allies—and shocking sacrifice.

As war rages and Dust drains from the sky, the fate of the living—and the dead—finally comes to depend on two children and the simple truth of one simple story.

  1. These books are so cool! I honestly thought that The Amber Spyglass could not live up to the first two in the series, but it did. I applaud you, Mr. Pullman, for creating a world that is both so immensely interesting and religiously chaotic. His writing style fits the plot really well, and the amount of political insecurity and religious interference is really fascinating.
I am running out of things to say for this book because many of them I already discussed in my post on The Subtle Knife. All I can say is, this is a fantastic series that I think will prove interesting to a very wide audience.

  2. This is also a great story about adolescence and growing up. On top of the story, there are many themes that clearly suggest the awkwardness and difficulty of becoming older and more mature.

  3. This series was clearly written as children's books, but based on your comment it looks like it has a message about the adult world. Would you recommend this more to adults or children?

  4. You know, I would actually recommend this to all ages, it really has aspects of all levels of life. If you are young, you can look up to figures like Will and Lyra for inspiration. If you are older, you can relive your childhood in a new fantastical way. I will most definitely re-read these books at some point, and I do not think my enjoyment will lessen at all because of my increased age.

  5. Does the author include any other characters to help out Lyra and Will in this one and the second one? Probably a stupid question but I thought I should ask?

  6. There are many characters that appear in the first and second that are prevalent in the third, Characters like Lord Asriel, Mrs. Coulter, and Lee Scoresbee all play very important roles in the story. However, despite their presence, Lyra and will are still very alone, unaware of their own destiny, and desperate to be back with their families and friends.
