Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of the The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out of work actor. Together this dynamic pair begin their journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitch Hiker's Guide "A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have" and a galaxy-full of fellow travellers: Zaphod Beeblebrox - the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out to lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod's girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ball-point pens he has bought over the years.

  1. I just started the book last week and am enjoying it. i like how he adds so much comedy to the story. I remember reading small parts when someone else was reading it a few years ago, so i picked it up when i saw it last week.

  2. I have just met the first alien Ford Prefect is a very odd character. He should have spent more time on researching human names. He thought that his name was inconspicuous. I would say that he is my favorite character so far.

  4. As always, do you have a favorite character? A least favorite character? Do you have a favorite part of the book? Do you even like Mr Ford or is he just tolerable?

  5. Is the book confusing and do you think there's a certain audience this book should be for and if so what do you feel it would be appropriate for?

  6. While this is mainly a comedy, there is definitely a story. Did you like the story or were you just reading because it is funny.

  7. Ari- I do definitely like the book for both the story and the comedy. I find that they are in a good balance just enough to keep you interested, but not dying from laughter.

  8. Kahla- I do think that my favorite character was Zaphod Beeblebrox, as they describe him. The two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out to lunch president of the galaxy. I don't have and part of the book that i favor more than the others, i found it all to be equally great.

  9. Molly- I do not find any of the book to be confusing, though it does use a very wide vocabulary a few of the words of which i did not know. so in that case i would say that the audience is probably be teens to adults, mostly because of the fact that many younger people would probably not pick up on the humor and would have a hard time with the vocab.

  10. I did enjoy this book very much. I found his writing style interesting with the way he added humor and story. In the future i would like to pick up some of the other books in the series.
