This book is very.. interesting. I like how the writing is very different, it is in her voice, and it somehow characterizes her more than if it was written like a normal human being now'a'days would write. The book can get kind of graphic at times, but I think for me anyway, that makes me want to read more into her and why all these things are happening. One thing I am still trying to understand, is why she is writing to God. She doesn't seem to be asking for anything. I guess, what she is writing just don't say "Im writing to God" other than the fact that she says it in the intro to her letters.
ReplyDeleteCelie view herself as much less than pretty. she tried to learn, and yet her father always called her stupid and ugly despite her best efforts. In The Color Purple, it shows her horrible grammar and spelling, and yet she still tried.
ReplyDeleteThe way the book is written can be very confusing at times, probably because of the grammar and spelling, sometimes you have to trouble take to know what she is trying to say. Other than that,it is a very good book. It shows how life was for her, and how she was feeling at that moment.
I have not gotten much farther into this book, but I think it is getting even more confusing for me. I don't know if it's because I am reading too fast, or if I really just cant understand when she is trying to say. I might just flip back a few pages and re-read and see if I can understand it better a second time. Overall however; I like the idea of the book and even though the writing style is very weird and confusing most of the time, the book can be interesting. I also like how the way the book is written shows about her and how truly hard her life was at the time. It makes you feel, and I live for books that make you feel something for the characters.
ReplyDeleteThis book can get very confusing if you go too fast, probably because of the horrible grammar Celie uses. I find if u take it a little slower, it is a bit easier to understand. **spoiler Alert** basically what I have gathered from the book so far is that she was raped by her father, had two kids with him, she was forced to marry a random man, the mans kid Harpo gets married, and Harpo is getting fat.
ReplyDeleteSO far Sofia and the kids have left Harpo for awhile. He believes that they are ever coming back, and built a bar. He has the famous lady sing there every weekend. I think the farther I read into the book, the more slowly I am able to get used tot he speak.
ReplyDeleteI tried reading the book a little bit faster, and it seems as if all the words kind of mash together and my mind makes more sense out of it if I skim read. :) I have gotten to the part where Matilda is at, and I would say the book keeps getting very interesting at times.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you two are enjoying the book despite all the challenges. Since we'll be working on Of Mice and Men, we may continue not having time to talk about this, so please keep blogging about it. I'll try to check on your page numbers this week :).
ReplyDeleteAt this point in the book it is starting to get very interesting. A huge love circle has taken place. Celie also left with Squeak and two others. They came back for a visit, and Celie found that her husband was a wreck, indicating that he actually missed her! Could it be true?!
ReplyDeleteI am beginning to like the book very much, for the characters are developing nicely, along with the plot line. The writing style is also getting easier and easier to understand the more you read, I think it is because you get used to the slang and bad grammar.
After staying awhile, Celie discovers that Harpo and Sofia are together again. Squeak has become good at singing, and now sings at several different places. Squeak also flirts a lot with Shugs man.
ReplyDeleteMr._______ has begun to show his more sensitive side. He willingly drives Celie around, and he now shows great interest in shells. He also keep his house painted in a bright white paint. Is all of this because he felt lonely without Celie?
ReplyDeleteThe books style is getting better, I think as the book progresses the grammar becomes better.
