the giver.

The Giver, the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most influential novels of our time. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Lois Lowry has written three companion novels to The Giver, includingGathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

  1. Why do you think the book was titled the Giver and not the Receiver?

  2. This seems outside of your usual book choices; what made you decide to read this book? How does reading a book with a more thorough plot structure affect the way you read the book? Does it make you stop and think about what the message is that it's trying to convey to you often, or is it fairly straight forward?

    2. Audio books have become a very popular media. How do you feel listening to a book on tape compares to reading a book in front of you?
