Vermont's mysterious mountains, hills, and hollows are rich
with timeless tales of ghosts, phantoms, and horrible haunts, and Joe Citro has
been covering that "dead-beat" for over a decade. In The Vermont
Ghost Guide you'll encounter:
- a poltergeist raining stones on a hapless North Pownal
farm;
- Northfield's Phantom Gravedigger;
- a Ryegate ghostly door that appears and vanishes;
- Charles Dickens's ghost guiding a writer's hand in
Brattleboro;
- a doppelganger's prediction of death in Cavendish;
- the Midnight Cow, haunting the highways;
- a miner's specter, embedded in stone;
- the mysterious Eddy Brothers who marked Vermont as
"The Spirit Capital of the Universe";
- and many, many more.
But Be Warned! Citro's Vermont is not the idyllic New
England wonderland of tourist bureaus and scenic postcards. These are shadowy
haunts and whispered horrors, the ghosts, ghouls, gores, and mysteries of the
Green Mountain State, rendered in eerie black-and-white by artist Steve
Bissette. Perfect for visitors and residents, children and anyone else with an
interest in or curiosity about Vermont history, legend, and lore, The Vermont
Ghost Guide is sure to have a long shelf life and be of continuing interest for
years to come.
Noah, did you like this book? Have you read any other of Citro's work?
ReplyDeleteIts a good book and I really Citro. I've read two other books of his(Unseen and Dues Ex). This one was fairly creepy and scary, but I would have to say Deus Ex is the freakiest.
DeleteIs this a guide on what ghosts are or what is this? By reading the storys, i guess, it sounds like this is a book on ghost encounters and the strange activitys. But no matter what the book is, it looks like it's fun to read because...I like ghosts!
ReplyDeleteIt's a collection of stories that have "really" happened in Vermont so its not really a guide to ghosts, but more like a collection of short stories. Citro did make really good Vermont monster guide with some great artwork in it.
DeleteAre you superstitious in any way? Do you believe in any of these stories about ghosts or haunting from beyond the grave? I take enjoyment in the scary stories so this might be something that I am interested in reading. Also what other books has he written and also are they also justas/ more scary?
ReplyDeleteCitro is such a popular author here in Vermont- not surprisingly. Is it possible that some of these things actually have taken place?
