Kurt,
ReplyDeleteI imagine this book is different from others you tend to read. The challenges the characters face aren't as extreme as in _My Side of the Mountain_, for example. The characters are also younger. Still, I wonder if you can relate to it. The characters are pretty true to life, and they live in a rural section of Virginia, somewhat like rural sections of Vermont. It might be a stretch for your interests, but that's one thing reading is great for. It lets us into the lives of people who are different from us.
I can not relate to the book yet but I might relate later in the story
ReplyDeleteHey Wire-mouth, I mean, Kurt,
ReplyDeleteI'd like you to identify what you don't like about the book. I know that's not always an easy thing to do (I don't know why I don't like it. I just don't like it.), but it's helpful to think about how the book compares to others. Here are some questions that could get you moving. What do you wish it had more of? Are there times when you're reading smoothly and other times when you're checking the page number every two sentences? Which are those parts? What books do you like more than this one? What is the difference between those and this one? Do you like the characters or not? Why? Do you care what happens to them? Why or why not?
I hope that by answering these questions, you can start to identify what it is you like and dislike. That can help steer your choices for new books and make reading more fun. It will also help you identify the parts of a story which can improve your writing.
